What Wilde was actually reported to have said was "Ah, well, then I suppose I shall have to die beyond my means". This was quoted in a 1906 biography, The Life of Oscar Wilde, by R. H. Shepherd – "at the mention of a huge fee for a surgical operation" (according to the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations).
